Announcements

  • New adjunct faculty and returning adjunct faculty were introduced: Debbie Barolli, Vanessa Bishop, Keisha Darius, Natalia Dunina, Carmen Echerri, Chirine Faraj, and Jennifer Marotta; and Nicole Beveridge and Nicole Colbert
  • Faculty were updated on the proposed curriculum changes for ESL 101, ESL 102, and ENG 1050 as well as new course proposals for “ESL 99” (Beginner ESL) and “ENG 1051” (second semester of ENG 1050).

Discussion

  • New Course Proposal: “Beginner ESL” 8 hrs.
    • Faculty agreed there is a need to run a beginner course for students with ESL Accuplacer composite scores 20-65 who either decline CLIP recommendations or have timed out of CLIP with Accuplacer composite scores under 65.
    • Faculty were encouraged to contact Kristine and Patty after the meeting if they are interested in teaching a possible second section of this pilot in the fall.
  • ESL 101 Issues
    • Faculty discussed ways to handle student requests to exit the ESL101 program. Students should be told it is a two-semester sequence. Students will remain in the ESL program for the full 2 semesters except for major exceptions. Students talk. When one student learns it might be possible to exit, others usually approach with the same request. To avoid that situation, ESL101 students should not be told they might be able to skip ESL102 until after grades are calculated at the end of the semester and the student has been presented to ESL faculty for a decision.
  • Navigate 360
  • ESL Program Goals
    • Faculty were encouraged to present or lead a brief PD, share pedagogical strategies, and/ordiscuss their publications, current research, conference presentations at the May meeting. Anyone interested was asked to email Kristine and Patty.
    • Faculty were asked to email Kristine and Patty if they were published or presented at conferences during the 2024-2025 academic year. That information will be included in the English department ESL program goals/outcomes that co-directors will be submitting in June.
    • Faculty were asked if they would like to volunteer to have one of their classes observed by new adjunct faculty who are starting in the fall. Several faculty members volunteered.
  • Presentation – Patty shared highlights of her publication in the Winter issue of JELE, University of Central Florida. Digital Stories of Resilience: A Case Study of Urban Community College ESL Students. Journal of English Learner Education, 16(2). Faculty discussed how the resilience theme encourages open dialogue with students.
  • English Department Mission Statement
    • Faculty discussed the use of the term English as a Second Language in the newly drafted department mission statement. Some alternative, contemporary terms were suggested. A case was made by some faculty to continue to use the term for now since it is still in the name of the program, and it would also make it easier for people to find our program when searching online. Faculty agreed that we should consider a change to a more contemporary term for the program.
