The required core composition sequence is led by two full-time faculty members holding tenure/CCE-track positions. Each co-coordinator earns 12 hours of released time annually (6 per term), which includes work during the winter and/or summer modules as part of released time.

The following is a list of duties performed by the composition co-coordinators:

Student support

  • Handle student issues and facilitate communication between students and instructors
  • Handle class/course issues, including scheduling problems 
  • Adjudicate students’ requests for transfer of credit and course waivers
  • Handle students’ requests to retake courses

Hiring new part-time faculty

  • Solicit, collect, and vet resumes
  • Track enrollment numbers in the weeks preceding the Fall and Spring semesters 
  • Interview possible new adjunct instructors for Comp courses and make recommendations to the Chairperson
  •  Mentor new adjunct hires as they transition to teaching writing at Kingsborough, including their participation in Collaborative Portfolio Assessment and other initiatives

Faculty support

  • Communicate with Eng 12/12A0/24 course instructors
  • Plan and run orientations for new adjunct and full-time instructors, as well as faculty who are new to teaching Eng 12A0-ALP.
  • Plan and run targeted Professional Development sessions each semester, including sessions for Eng 12A0-ALP instructors or on topics relevant to teaching 12/12A0/24
  • Manage CPA groups, maintain communication with groups, and gather data from groups each term
  • Schedule, set agenda for, and run approximately 10 CRC meetings during an academic year 
  • Revise curricula, learning outcomes, and other program documents via the CRC
  • Manage adjunct pay for CRC and other PD sessions
  • Continuously update the Comp program website (on the CUNY commons) to maintain a useful, informative, and inspiring space for faculty 
  • Create and maintain accurate sample syllabi, syllabus templates, curricula, and assessment documents for Eng 12, 12A0, and 24 on the website 
  • Update course descriptions (in the college catalog and the English Department pages of the KCC website) for all courses in the sequence via the college council curriculum committee
  • Solicit and communicate with instructors for Civic Engagement versions of English 24 courses
  • Solicit submissions for the English 24 Best Essay Competition and establish a process for essay selection and award presentation.

Planning and assessment 

  • Coordinate and collaborate with Composition Co-coordinator, the Department Chairperson, the adjunct mentor and other Department and KCC faculty and staff 
  • Communicate regularly with KLC leadership regarding tutoring needs for Eng 12, 12A0, and 24 students 
  • Create CUE budget proposals for upcoming academic year 
  • Create CUE reports at end of academic year 
  • Create annual goals and accomplishments report for the Composition sequence
  • Design and execute annual course assessments in Eng 12, 12A0, and 24, analyze the results, and share with the department
  • Continuously revise and improve annual program assessment practices within the sequence in light of current research and scholarship in composition and rhetoric 
  • Coordinate with campus programs regarding ALP registration questions (e.g. Academic Advisors, ODLC) and IT regarding Blackboard access. 
  • Work closely with Institutional Effectiveness to gather and analyze annual outcomes, grade, and retention data on all courses

Professional involvement

  • Attend monthly CUNY-wide Friday meetings of the writing discipline council (WDC)
  • Attend professional conferences (TYCA, CCCC) to stay up to date on Comp research and practice

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in writing studies, rhetoric and composition, English Education, or a closely related field is preferred. Also preferred are a history of the following: professional engagement in writing studies scholarship; strong organizational and leadership skills; ability to work successfully with higher administration; and cooperation with others for the good of the department.
